Great

Sometimes you see something and the first thought that comes to mind is “What a neat idea” and the second idea is “How in the world did she think of that?”  Dear Photograph is one of those things.  It is a Tumblr blog made of photos of people holding old photos in the location where those old photos were taken.

There is a picture of a picture of a 1950’s bridal party in front of the church.  There is another of an adult hand at the beach holding a picture of kids at the beach in the 1970’s.  In short, Dear Photograph seeks to blend the past and the present and it does a beautiful job of it.

Idea 10/10

There are a lot of blogs out there with a lot different ideas to share but we’ve never seen anything quite like Dear Photograph, and we love it.  The photographer tries to have the picture held so that it truly looks like the folks from days gone by are standing in today’s picture – but not to the extent of Photoshopping; these are clearly pictures of people holding pictures.  Each photo is captioned “Dear Photograph” and the captions tell a story about the picture.

Design 9/10

Looking at Dear Photograph is like looking at a photo album and finding photos of loved ones from different eras.  It is a visual treat.  We loved the picture of a little girl in a bathing suit being held in front of a house when when there is snow on the ground.  The captions are wonderful too.  A picture of a little girl on a Big Wheel is captioned “Believe it or not, skinned knees are not the worst thing that can happen to you.  Love 18 year old you”.  A photo of the burning World Trade Center says “I was astounded but hadn’t had time to consider what I was seeing”.

Utility 2/10

Dear Photograph Tumblr

Dear Photograph is totally useless, but who cares?  It is totally beautiful and that’s all that matters in this case.  Maybe we ought to change that rating, because we all need beauty in our lives, and Dear Photograph provides that.

Price 10/10

Dear Photograph is totally free to enjoy, unless you count the cost of your internet service and device, but you’d have those anyway.  That’s the neat thing about the internet, there are so many things you can enjoy for the price of internet service and Dear Photograph is one of them.  Oh, the blogger, Taylor Jones, does have a book of similar photos, so if you want to spend money, you can.

Usability 10/10
